The programmes offer graphic display of all parameters and make the sound-design, editing and programming much faster, as well as giving a better overview of the end result. These programs are referred to as Caged Artist Editor/Librarians. Here's a small list: Casio: CZ Rider (CZ-101/1000, CZ-1, CZ-3000/5000) VZ Rider (VZ-1/10) E-Mu: Proteus Editor Ensoniq: ESQ-apade (ESQ-1/M, SQ-80) Kawai: K-1 Editor K-3 Editor K-5 Editor Korg: DS-8 Editor DP-2000 Editor M-1 Editor Oberheim: M-6 Tricks (Matrix 6/1000) Roland: D-50 Editor Baby D Editor (D 110/10/20) MT-32 Editor Yamaha: DX Heaven (DX-7, TX-7) Four-Op Deluxe (TX-81Z, FB-01, DX-100/27/21) Lexicon: PCM-70 Editor Effects: FX Pac 1 (ART Multiverb, Digitech DSP 128, Lexicon LXP-1, Yamaha SPX-90/II) Caged Artist's X-OR - Dr. T's Music Software In addition to this list, Dr.T's Music Software also offers the generic MIDI organization program X-OR. Caged Artist's X-OR is created to help you set up and organize your MIDI equipment in order to minimize the technical tampering and help you concentrate on your creative work. X-OR stands for System Exclusive Orchestrator, and consists of a number of modules, or "Profiles", as Dr.T calls them. There is a "Profile" for each MIDI-unit, and new profiles are being made, as new equipment shows up. That way, X-OR is a very flexible solution, whether you're using new or old equipment. Each profile gives access to MIDI-unit parameters, using buttons, graphic sliders and graphic displays. There are also help-pages for each profile. If X-OR is too large and heavy for you to handle, you should go for one of the specialized editor/librarian programs, or Music-X. Version 1.3 of X-OR comes with 99 different profiles. Group 4: Other MIDI utilities Performance - Pregnant Badger Music Performance is, like X-OR, a kind of MIDI database. Performance lets you set up program changes, sequences, sys-ex dumps etc. and ties this information together to form songs in a reportoir. However, Performance is _not_ an editor/librarian like X-OR. The MIDI Library v2.0 - Pregnant Badger Music A number of different MIDI tools, as well as a library to make MIDI programming faster and easier, for those who want to program their own MIDI tools/programs. Among the tools are a MIDI monitor, Play MIDI file, Display MIDI file, Data dump to/from Amiga/MIDI unit etc. The MIDI Library is available on AmigaLibDisk #227 from Fred Fish. (PD). Glib - Tim Thompson, Steve Falco, Alan Bland Text-oriented librarian/editor with support for Yamaha TX-81Z, DX-100, Roland DEP-5, Korg DW-8000 og Kawai K5. Source code in C is also supplied, so with sufficient knowledge of C and your synthesizers sys-ex format, you can customize GLIB to support your own synthesizer. Available on AmigaLibDisk 228 from Fred Fish and AM/FM issue #1. MidiTools - Fred Cassirer Simple programmes for recording and playback of MIDI data. These should be considered.. ahem.. experimental. Available on AmigaLibDisk 54 from Fred Fish. (PD) Panl - David Weinbach Universal MIDI patch-panel which lets you transmit MIDI parameter information from your Amiga to a MIDI unit which supports these. Available on AmigaLibDisk 82 from Fred Fish. (PD) DX VoiceFiler - Yesck Deckard Program to transport sound banks between the Amiga and Yamaha's DX-series of synthesizers. Available on AmigaLibDisk 82 from Fred Fish. (PD) MidiTools - Yesck Deckard A number of different MIDI utilities. Program Change, MIDI Thru, Echo Processor, etc. Available on AmigaLibDisk 159 from Fred Fish. (PD) DX VoiceSorter - David Bouckley This program helps you sort sounds that are imported with Yesck Deckard's DX Voicefiler (ref. above). Available on AmigaLibDisk 149 from Fred Fish. (PD) CZEd - Oliver Wagner A fully featured editor/librarian for Casio's CZ-synthesizers. Includes sound editiring, memory split, bank loader and memory dump. Available on AmigaLibDisk 323 from Fred Fish. (SW) AlgoRythms v1.0 - Thomas E. Yesnzen Algorythmical composing program. The program generates "random" music after given parameters, like note key, tempo, range, intensity etc. Supports MIDI. Available on AmigaLibDisk 356 from Fred Fish. (PD) RolandS220 v2.0 - Dieter Burns Program for transferring samples between an Amiga and a Roland S-220 sampler. Available on AmigaLibDisk 255 from Fred Fish. (PD) MIDI Analyzer - Paul Overaa A simple program to show incoming MIDI data. Useful for testing of equipment. Available on AM/FM issue #1. MIDICOM v1.26 - Animal Voice Production A/S Multi-use MIDI program. Firstly, it is a calculator to transform tempo (BPM) to actual time (MS - milliseconds) for use of effect units in music/sound production (timed echoes etc.). There's also a generic file-dumper between the Amiga and MIDI-unit (System Exclusive), and lastly, a simple test panel to simplify operations such as program change and other MIDI states. (Portamento on/off, Local on/off etc. etc.) Available on MediaFoto BBS and on AM/FM issue #2. Group 5: Sound Sampling software - Aegis Audiomaster 3 (Audio Engineer) - Perfect Sound 3 - Sunrize Audition 4 Group 6: Other (non-MIDI) music/sound programmes Synthia II - The Other Guys Synthia II turns your Amiga into a synthesizer. Instruments and effects are generated by adjusting parameters in various instrument categories. Synthia II is especially suitable for creating string instruments like guitars, bass, harp etc. There is also a professional version available which offers the possibility to send Amiga-generated sound into a MIDI sampler for storage/playback in a higher resolution. SampleWrench - Dissidents Software Dissidents SampleWrench is a sample-editor for external MIDI samplers. It is set up in the same way as X-OR with external files for each type of sampler, but it handles the PCM-sounds (samples) on the Amiga screen, not as program parameters like other editor/librarian programs. The samples are being transferred via MIDI to the Amiga, where they are displayed and can be edited with cut, copy, paste, loop, zero, draw, reverse and so on. A PD demo-version of the program is available on Mediafoto BBS. Sonix - Aegis Sonix was one of the first music editors for the Amiga and has proved popular, although it's possibilities are rather aged by now. It offeres use of sampled sounds as well as Amiga-generated synthesized sounds, and proper note scoring of songs. Recommended for beginners. SoundTracker - (PD) - by various authors (Original by Karsten Obarski) First series of "trackers" for the Amiga. Introduced the "tracking" music format, with rows of characters and numbers instead of the standard note scoring formats. This program has later been updated about a million times by various programmers, and the Soundtracker has later been replaced by Noisetracker and Protracker, both of which use the same song format and general editing method, but offer many more functions. Ref. Noisetracker and Protracker below. NoiseTracker - (PD) by various authors Much more powerful version of the old "Soundtracker" idea. Same basic features as above, but offers many more functions. ProTracker v1.1B - (PD) by Lars Hamre (Amiga Freelancers) _Even_ more powerful version of the "Soundtracker" principle. Same basic features as Soundtracker and Noisetracker, but with _vast_ improvements, a built-in sound sampler and sample editor, an endless list of new functions and features, and also has on-line help. Probably the most commonly used music editor among professional Amiga-musicians today, used for writing game-music etc. MED (Music Editor) v3.20 - by Teijo Kinnunen PD, but with suggestion of a little donation of your own choice. Another music editor which uses the "tracker" principle for music editing. MED competes with ProTracker, both programs having some features the other one is lacking. MED offers the use of synthesized sounds, as well as simple MIDI support. Powerful editing of synthesis. Can store several songs in memory, all of which use the same instrument-set, and save them all as one file. Very useful for composing game music. OctaMED - by Teijo Kinnunen - marketed by Amiganuts United Commercial, low-budget program. Same description as MED v3.20, but offers the use of 4, 6 or 8 sound channels, by real-time mixing of two sounds and playing them both through 1 audio channel. Often results in quite badly distorted sounds. IntuiTracker v1.1 - (PD) by Jan-Ivar Bruarøy Intuitionized module-player, plays modules created with Soundtracker or Noisetracker. Slick user-interface, programming options, VU-meters, volume control and control panel. An update which also supports ProTracker modules is expected within short. Noiseplayer v4.0 - (PD) by "Flynn/Tristar" and Jolyon Ralph Program which loads a music "module" created with one of several different music editors, and plays the song, until another song is chosen or the the player is shut off. System-friendly and very flexible. Supports music created with one of the following music editors: NoiseTracker, Startrekker (4 chan), Protracker, SoundTracker 2.3-2.5, Future Composer, Delta Music 2.0-2.1, Sound Monitor, SIDMon, TFMX And Jam Cracker Modules. Mod Processor - (PD) by Brian Postma Program which loads a music "module" created with one of several popular music editors, processes the data and saves an executable file which, when run, will simply play the song. - Music/Instrument Rippers "Rippers" are programs made to extract music and/or instruments which are composed with one of the above music editors and incorporated in other programs, such as games or demos. The "rippers" let you extract the music and save it to a separate file, which can later be loaded into the suitable music editor. The most advanced "ripper" at the time of writing this, is "Multi-ripper" by Erlend Simonsen, however, there must be several hundred different "rippers" available and new ones are being made almost by the hour. ADDITIONS Please note that the document above is no where near complete, especially with regards to the endless list of public domain sound/music programmes, and it could probably never be, as the list goes on and on. We have only described the most popular ones. However, here's a quick listing of the music editors we know of, but which have not been described in this file: (Sorted A-Z) - Music Editors, composing tools: Brian's Soundmon Delta Music Future Composer Game Music Creator JamCracker JamCracker Professional Mark II Sound System Master Sound Monitor Octalyzer Quartet Rock Monitor SidMon SidMon II Sound FX SoundMonitor Startrekker TFMX UFO Noisetracker *************************** END OF FILE ****************************** *********************************** AM/FM ***********************************
